Eating and Drinking
Kalkan enjoys a wealth of quality restaurants offering traditional well cooked Turkish favorites, and also a range and style of cooking with a wider Mediterranean influence. The highlight of any evening is to dine in one of the many roof terrace or harbour side restaurants which are renowned for their quality cooking and, fresh food, warm friendly atmosphere and fantastic views across the bay.
There are also a number of more basic restaurants offering delicious traditional food throughout the day, ideal for late breakfasts, lunch or more casual evening meals.
Due to keen competition the restaurants are very reasonably priced. The local 'Angora' Turkish red and white wine is very palatable, foreign wines however are more expensive.
There a number of bars in town, many playing background music, but generally offering a laid back atmosphere. The local beer is Efes, with some imported beers, the normal selection of spirits, cocktails and the local aniseed drink, Raki are also available.
Shopping
Originally a Greek fishing village, the old town of Kalkan still retains its original charm with small winding streets meandering down to the harbour, lined with traditional shops offering local handmade crafts including: jewelry, glassware, pottery, carpets, cushions, metal lamps and plates, much of which is unique to the area.
There are a number of modern shops selling clothes, handbags, and accessories and several supermarkets meeting your needs for a self catering holiday.
The local market is held every Thursday, just down the hill from the apartment. Selling a wide selection of local fruit and vegetables, and spices, as well as household goods and copies of famous brand clothing.
Beaches and Beach Clubs
The towns pebble beach is located next to the harbour and is catered for by a number of local bars, cafés and restaurants. There are also a number of beach clubs which provide an ideal location to relax during the day. Many of which offer a free taxi or water taxi service.
The beautiful Kaputas beach is located only 10 minutes east of Kalkan, Slightly further a field, the stunning Patara beach is 20 minutes away, with its 18 km of unspoilt sands it has been rated one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The drive from Patara village to the beach is equally attractive with many ancient ruins along the way.
Activities
Scuba Diving - Kalkan is a popular place for scuba diving due to its crystal clear waters. There are plenty of dive sites with abundant marine life. The Kalkan Dive centre also offers try dives and PADI certified courses at very reasonable prices compared to the UK.
Gullet Cruises - a great way to explore the coastline and islands around Kalkan is to take a boat trip from the harbour. There are a number of options available form site seeing at some of the fantastic local historical sites, a visit to the local town of Kas, or simply relaxing at one of the secluded bays and swimming or snorkelling in the crystal clear waters.
Turkish bath and Spar - Many of the larger hotels offer traditional Turkish bath (Hamam) and other spar treatments and are open to nonresidents.
Hiking or Horse riding - A great way to explore the mountains above Kalkan with organised tours available in the town.
